The absinthe effect

For your information from Wikipedia : Absinthe is historically described as a distilled, highly alcoholic (45–74% ABV) beverage. It is an anise-flavoured spirit derived from herbs, including the flowers and leaves of the herb Artemisia absinthium, commonly referred to as "grande wormwood", together with green anise and sweet fennel. Absinthe traditionally has a natural green colour but can also be colourless. It is commonly referred to in historical literature as la fée verte (the Green Fairy). Although it is sometimes mistakenly called a liqueur, absinthe is not bottled with added sugar and is therefore classified as a spirit. Absinthe is unusual among spirits in that it is bottled at a very high proof but is normally diluted with water when consumed.
Last evening, there was at my friends' place a dinner. This is a kind of event this time of the year when we have the same meal, brought by one of us : duck backed in the oven hours long with mash potatoes and red collyflower cooked with wine and apples. This is absolutely delicious and It's not a thing I would miss, knowing in advance we will have a good time. It is in a small commity and It lasts hours; eating, drinking and sharing what happened during the year as we meet for wome of us only at this dinner. Some new people are invited but the close circle is always there. There was a new experiment to be made this evening : drinking absinthe and Its ritual. We brought the spoon (there is a shop in the city specialized in this alcohol) and the sugar and It started. It lasts pretty long, especially if you are a number around the table. Take your glass, put the spoon on it, put the sugar on the spoon, pour the absinthe slowly on it and, optional (that we did), set the sugar on fire with your lighter. Mix with some water. When It is ready, drink. It is very strong, so do not be surprised if suddenly, you can't express yourself correctly after the first drink. The thing is that we had more than one and sometimes even pure. The effect on me ? I felt suddenly vey tired (OK, It was already 3:00 a.m) but It charges me as well with some sad feelings that stay a long time today. This is completely weird and I asked around me and It is not exceptional. So I understand perfectly how It was in the beginning of last century when people got mad drinking this in Paris. I am not certain to try it again. I'd better have one of my favorite martini cocktail. If you wish to have something natural this week-end in the city, try the East Germany products' fair !
